Wat Thamkrabok Walkthru Podcast by Paul Garrigan

by The Discovering Alcoholic on September 2, 2010

I am very pleased to post a podcast first from our friend in recovery and author Paul Garrigan who gives us a walkthru of the famous Wat Thamkabrok where the Thai monks have a unique program for treating addicts and alcoholics. While I have visited and posted stories on the opium pipe monastery and the black monk of Wat Thamkrabok, Paul actually went through the program and started his recovery at this very unique healing center. Please, after you have listened to the podcast drop by and check other posts and podcasts by Paul over at PaulGarrigan.com.

Great podcast – good to hear Paul’s story as well as his voice after reading his blog. I look forward to more from Paul and hopefully other guests. In regards to the content, my recovery was characterized by several of the same things Paul mentioned. I had surrendered to alcohol – admitted defeat. In AA’s words I was powerless over it. I was willing to do anything not so much to get sober …but to end my suffering which at the time meant riding the “dragon” to the very end; whether it be death or an institution. My rock bottom and salvation was a place of total alienation and isolation, with strict rules and zero tolerance for failure to adhere to them.
