The Wonder Years at The Discovering Alcoholic

Childhood stardom too often ends with drug/alcohol abuse and ignominy; the ill fated young cast of Diff’rent Strokes exemplifies the curse of skyrocketing fame and then a plunge to rock bottom. Gary Coleman is still the eternal butt of all jokes; Todd Bridges is an accomplished criminal/addict, and Dana Plato seemed to fail at everything including minimum wage jobs, porn, and robbery… yet managed killing herself with an overdose of prescription drugs.

I Have followed a few here on TDA, some have gotten their lives back together like Maureen McCormick (Marcia Brady) and Melissa Gilbert (Laura Ingalls). Others not so much, Lindsay Lohan has yet to find real recovery and Michael Jackson’s story ended badly like Plato.

So when I scanned through another one of those reminiscent fluff “where are they now” pieces on the child actors of The Wonder Years I expected the worse but was pleasantly surprised.

Fred Savage, Danica McKellar, and Josh Saviano who played Kevin, Winnie, and Paul on the show all seem to be well adjusted, happy, and successful. Fred finished Stanford with a degree in English, got married and has two kids, and now works behind the cameras as a director. Danica graduated UCLA summa cum laude with a degree in mathematics and is now a New York Times best selling author, and Josh followed in the footsteps of his character graduating from Yale and becoming a New York lawyer.

I wonder what The Wonder Years did right?
