The Discovering Alcoholic

Update: Meet the Discovering Alcoholic

It’s a great pleasure to say that The Discovering Alcoholic hasn’t missed a nightly update in over a year and readership has increased by the thousands, so I figured introductions are in order for those new to the site. You have probably already guessed by the site name that yes, I am a recovering alcoholic clean and sober without relapse since the fall of 94’ and keep feeling better everyday. I am proud of my recovery and often share this fact.

I consider most substance addictions as birds of a feather, not making great distinction between drug addicts and alcoholics. It is my belief that any step toward recovery is a smart step and I support most programs including AA, NA, MA, religious groups, self-styled, and rehabs. I am a member of a substance abuse task force, hold a recovery class every week at a local methadone clinic, always have at least one or two alcoholics/addicts to which I act as a sponsor, and of course there is TDA. I have found through my efforts of attempting to help others that my own spirituality, confidence, and appreciation of life greatly increases.

Stories That Almost Made it on TDA this Month

photo by nevet5It’s not hard to find content for a site that concentrates on addiction and recovery topics, I just wish most of the news stories that got picked up on the radar were positive! As I run across relative news stories while surfing I usually just throw them in my favorites and move on, most of the time I either forget they have been saved or just have too many stories to choose from to write about.

With a cast of characters that sounds more like the start of a joke (a priest, movie star, and a drunk walk into a bar...), these stories would have made good topics, but for one reason or another just didn’t make it to my front page. There are quite a few here so I have forgone adding any comments, but I have placed them in sequence of how the mighty have fallen progressing to those falling mightily.

Priest Selling Cocaine from Rectory-

The Reverend Christopher Layden pleaded not guilty Thursday to two counts of delivery of less than 1 gram of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a church and one count of possession with intent to deliver 1 to 15 grams of cocaine near a church. The 33-year-old was arrested Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Newman Center after investigators found 3 grams of cocaine and drug paraphernalia while searching his home and office.

Screedler's Top Five Benefits of Getting Sober

Happy Birthday TDAHello everyone, it's been a while since I posted a blog on anything. I have tried to make comments on TDA's posts from time to time to stay in the loop. Today is a special day for TDA (it's not actually today but soon) and I thought I would write my own post and hope it worthy enough for him to post on the front page so he could take a little break today or tomorrow from writing. As you can tell he is pretty adamant about keeping the site updated every day - no matter how he feels physically, mentally, or what demands the rest of the world has for him. He knows this is part of his recovery and that it must come first.

I owe him thanks for my own sobriety and can't tell anyone enough about how much he helped me when I was still a suffering alcoholic. I can honestly say I probably would not have become sober without his help and concern. He took care of so much for me when I simply couldn't .
