higher power

I said goodbye to an old friend today and laid to rest my cat, companion, and confidant of thirteen years. He is survived by his brother/littermate and a host of fond memories that will keep him forever in my thoughts. I thought about posting a recent picture but decided he would have appreciated it more if I showed him off in one of his favorite poses, with exposed belly and splayed legs viewing the world through the slitted eyes of lazy contentment. This often displayed, blatantly immodest mode of sleep never failed to make my wife and I smile and I can think of no better way to remember my old friend.

But this is a recovery blog, and as a sober cat he would have expected a relevant tribute. So in honor of Thing 2, I would like to tell you about what he has taught me about the second step.

I am serious, I deleted God today and it was rather disconcerting.

The image you see is God creating the moon, stars, and planets; a panel of Michelangelo’s famed Sistine Chapel masterpiece. I had saved the picture with the title of “God”, and then added it into the image database of my Drupal-powered blog. Realizing that I hadn’t properly sized the image, I went to correct the situation by pressing edit and then delete so that I could load one up properly sized.

I must say that after reading the above message, there was a little second guessing going on before I punched the delete button and started over.

Now, I get kind of embarrassed when I think of this but I'll tell you anyway. I bought a stone from a "spiritually enlightened" store for $20.00 so that it would bring good vibes to me. Sadly, this was not while I was actively using drugs, if it were I would have an excuse for this behavior. I was stone cold sober (pun intended).

It was once told to me that a certain type of stone could attract good vibes. If you carried this stone on your person and you focused on this stone's energy, you would benefit from it. Let me break that down for you: I walked around with a rock in my pocket. A rock that I could have just picked up outside off the ground for free, but chose to pay someone $20.00 for.
