Science Fiction Makes Recovery Special

by The Discovering Alcoholic on January 10, 2010

The secret to a good recovery is wolfmen, predators, angels, and demons. It’s retro horror, black comedy, and campy sci-fi. It’s big budget flicks with colossal special effects and cerebral indy films. Ok it’s books too. And yes, family. Then there’s work, money, sports, friends, and food. All right, you got me; it’s everything but drinking and drugging.

I was asked today by somebody in early recovery for which sobriety is still an hourly struggle what makes recovery so special, now there are a thousand good answers to this question but I told him it was having and pursuing new priorities in life. It’s waking up in the morning and looking forward to life, and not just to having or trying to avoid that first drink.

Today, after reading this great run down of 2010 movies by our favorite sci-fi blog io9, I am looking forward to popcorn and some very exciting looking flicks. I’ve embedded one of the longer and more intriguing trailers from the list, Legion, so please enjoy one of the secrets to recovery!

I can’t even figure out who the bad guys are. Sigh.
