R.I.P. Mindy McCready

I was saddened to hear Mindy McCready killed herself this weekend.  She was a multi platinum selling country music star, as well as a long time sufferer of both alcohol and drug abuse.  She shot herself in the head on her front porch; the same front porch her boyfriend killed himself on, just last month, in the very same way.  Over the years, she lived her life like most of  us do while struggling with addiction.  Multiple run ins with the law and more than one trip to rehab (Celebrity Rehab at one point). She upped the crazy anti by having a tabloid sensationalized affair with baseball superstar Roger Clemons, and was the unwilling (stolen sex tape?) star of a vivid entertainment porn video called Baseball Mistress.

McCready had attempted suicide at least three times. She was hospitalized in July and September 2006 following drug overdoses and then again in December 2008 after she cut her wrists.

She was in her late 30’s, which puts her in that age bracket where abuse starts to really start causing more and more troubles. That’s when it started going downhill for me, if I were to put an age on when I crossed from abuse to addiction it would have been right about age 36-37. By 40, I knew I was a full blown alcoholic and by 45 I had lost most everything to drinking – relationships, jobs, houses, and freedom.

I am not a fan of much modern country music, I like Buffet, Waylon, Willy, Jerry Jeff Walker, and David Allen Coe, that dude who sings “I was drunk, the day, my momma got out of prison”.  I wish Mindy would have stayed with us. She had more source material than even him to craft the perfect country western song.

Here’s Mindy singing one of her biggest hits, appropriately asking for the help of Ten Thousand Angels. I hope they are helping her and her surviving family now.
