Life Extinguished, Families Devastated, and Futures Erased

by The Discovering Alcoholic on December 5, 2009

Meredith Kercher is dead, her family is devastated, and now with today’s sentencing that last of the three responsible for her death have been sentenced to a quarter century of incarceration. Kercher had her throat cut and then crushed by this group of drunk and drugged “friends”. Link surfing the headlines this evening I came across the older post below of Kercher featured in a music video shortly before her murder. It reminded me of the story sent to me by ScienceBlogger Abel Pharmboy of Terra Sigillata about the tragic death of Elena Bright Shapiro. The doctor that killed her while driving intoxicated has been charged with murder, and her friends and family will only see this beautiful ballerina dance again in the video tributes. And who can forget the story of Diane Schuler, whose DUI induced fatal car accident took the lives of so many children and will no doubt haunt the surviving family members for the rest of their lives.

One would think that it would take only a few of these stories before alcohol would be demonized by civilized people, but no matter how many lives are extinguished, families devastated, and futures erased… our love affair with alcohol remains strong.
