The Letters From Hell series written by guest poster Screedler were the most visited and read posts of the old Drupal powered TDA. Unbeknowst to me, the links to this series were broken in my switch to a WordPress platform so to make up for it I will post the whole series again one new one per day.
Welcome to Letters from Hell – Part 13. As befitting the holiday season this letter deals with a holiday; just not Christmas. Click here to read all the prior installments of the series.

Dear Paul and Nan,
I hope this letter finds you both doing well. I hope the holiday was enjoyable for you both. It was just another day here in the joint. It was actually quieter than usual. I think subconsciously it made everyone miss there freedom more than they were willing to admit. Everyone kind of stayed in their racks or watched TV in the dayroom. Believe it or not there was actually a marathon of Steven Seagal movies on AMC and that’s what everyone wanted to watch. It was actually a subset of a larger marathon called the “Four Fathers of Action” which included a block of movies from Seagal, Chuck Norris, Jet Li and J.C. Van Damme over a period of 48 hours. I tried to sleep more than usual.
Many thanks again for taking care of all my business while I’m in here. It sounds like I will be in here at the very minimum for another month or so. It could very well be longer – hopefully you won’t have to deal with the wake of my problems I created for a while. I know the only way I can repay you is to stay sober and I intend to do that.
I have been incarcerated for 62 days now. Each day goes by very slowly but looking back on it, it doesn’t seem like it’s been that long.

There have been new additions to A9U1 since I last wrote; some welcome, some not. Two new guys with no nicknames have turned out to be OK. One named Frank has been here a couple of weeks; the other named Jason has been here just a little longer. Frank was put in after being picked up on outstanding warrants while visiting his Uncle here in Thorsby. He was wanted for a DUI in Pelham and possession in Birmingham. He is currently living in New Orleans. Ah – Sweet Home Alabama. Jason is a car thief and drug manufacturer (Ice is his specialty) who has already been sentenced to prison for two concurrent four year sentences. He is eager to get out of here and sent on to prison. Both Frank and Jason have provided me with hours of entertaining stories.
One unwelcome addition has been a gangster named Me’-me’. I have already had an altercation with him over thievery. He is a true ward of the state, getting a check from the government for being mentally challenged. He cannot read or write. I actually feel sorry for him.
I finished “Imajica” and really enjoyed it, even though I only had part one – “The Fifth Dominion”. I am currently reading Sidney Sheldon’s “The Sands of Time”; a fast read about four nuns on the run in 1970’s Spain. I would imagine it has already been made into TV movie that I missed. The only think of note I have seen on TV has been a new series on Spike TV channel based on the “Blade” movies. It’s pretty good – check it out if you get a chance.
Well, I can tell you it is hard to appreciate freedom in jail. But, I can also tell you that I bet I appreciate it now more than someone who hasn’t been in my situation. While I was in a physical prison for several months back then; I had really been a prisoner of my addiction, for several years prior to that. It’s good to be free. Have a Merry Christmas!
