Just What America Needs, More Potheads

Unemployment highs are the new norm, rogue nations are closing in on nuclear armament, and America is barreling toward a fiscal cliff that could send the world economy to new depths- these are serious times.

Not to worry though, the good people of Washington and Colorado are on top of the issues and have taken action!  Their answer:  more potheads.

Under the recreational marijuana measures in Colorado and Washington, personal possession of up to an ounce (28.5 grams) of marijuana would be legal for anyone at least 21 years of age. They also will permit cannabis to be legally sold and taxed at state-licensed stores in a system modeled after a regime many states have in place for alcohol sales.

Can’t say it’s been my experience, but obviously the way these states are voting the potheads out West must be a truly industrious crowd to gather majority support.  Maybe out there they have a saying:  Have a serious problem?  Call a pothead!  Or maybe they are just looking to bring in that extra revenue for the state.  You know, like all that money coming in from cigarettes and alcohol… which unfortunately is only a fraction of that is going right back out the door to combat the deleterious effects of these substances.  Could be though that they really plan to regulate and tax steeply in these states to combat the negative revenue, health, and lawlessness that will come with legalization… of course they will probably need to wage a “drug war” to combat all the smuggling tax evaders and additional criminal behavior.  And the parents, they must be thrilled that their children will now see alcohol use AND dope smoking as accepted rites of passage and something to look forward to as an… adult?

Let’s here it for CO and WA, making sure not a single potential addict or alcoholic misses their calling!  This is just what America needs right now, more potheads.

Please explain. Do you disagree with primary points 1) that cigarettes and alcohol cost society more than the revenue they bring in 2) that there will be enforcement and regulatory costs of legalization and that law enforcement spending will not be reduced or 3) do you think parents will thrilled about their kids smoking pot?
