Headlines that start off with, “Man saved from…” automatically make me think of a natural disaster or some sort of deadly accident. I’m talking about helicopters winching down safety lines or firemen desperately cutting away with the Jaws of Life in a race with death.
Maybe, “Man saved from raging flood!”
Or, “Man saved from flaming wreckage!”
But not, “Man saved from portable toilet!” Anticlimactic, to say the least.
So when it takes an entire rescue unit over a half an hour to cut out a grown man tightly plugged into the “honey pot” of a portable toilet, it doesn’t take much imagination to guess that alcohol was involved. Lebanon, PA Deputy Fire Commissioner Chris Miller described the scene, “They found 31-year-old Shannon P. Hunter of Lebanon. He was drunk, naked and wedged up to his waist in the hole of the toilet.”

Because of the human waste and the formaldehyde-based chemicals in the toilet, rescuers had to put on biohazard suits to rescue Hunter, Miller said. Rescue workers used liquid soap and a saw to cut away the plastic toilet, and Hunter was freed after about 25 minutes. “He was wedged in tight, so we systematically had to cut pieces of the toilet away so we did not cause further harm to him,” Miller recalled. “After he was released, the subject then had to be decontaminated before he could be presented to (paramedics) so he could be evaluated and treated for scrapes and abrasions around his hips.” ~ “York Daily Record
Mr. Hunter claimed to have consumed seven beers at a local bar before he fell into the toilet. When the police asked him why he was naked a shrug of his shoulders was his only answer.
Police Chief Bill Harvey said the incident, “defied sober logic.” I agree, but I do know one thing from experience- when a drunk gets in a bind one of the first solutions they come up with is to begin taking off their clothes. Maybe he should have said it was just a good example of “drunk logic”.
