The article unfortunately did not go into any detail of how these devices were supposed to operate but I seriously doubt they are truly effective other than as a placebo. Of course one never knows when the next great cure will come along, but electric and radioactive medical devices have been hawked by charlatans over the last two centuries. In almost all cases, patients were considered lucky if these devices were just ineffectual instead of being dangerous.
Take a gander at the Quack Medicine site where you’ll find the Allied Merke Institute’s thermocap (seen in pic) for baldness and other oddities. On a more serious note, just the recognition of addiction as a problem is a good first step. Sticking your head into an electrified cat carrier may actually work… as long as the regimen includes a new environment, group meetings, and behavioral training with a competent staff.
