Music With A Message

Music has been a big part of my recovery. So it makes sense that it should be a big part of this blog. Music is a way to express and release emotions. It can inspire, energize, or calm down. Music can explain things when words fail. Good music to me usually carries a message or feeling that is relative to real life situations.

Scott Weiland R.I.P.

December 5, 2015

Unfortunately Scott Weiland was as famous for being a drug addict as he was for being the lead singer of two great bands, the Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver.  He goes now to the great gig in the sky… I hope. He tried many times to get his demons under control, succeeding at taming them for brief periods, but sadly, in the end […]

Mama Please Take Their Drugs Away

September 4, 2015

I am not a fan of this song; and I do not buy what the band leader says here after the vid.  Nothing rings true about any of it to me.  The band is Bobaflex and they try way to hard to be hard.   The song itself sounds like 10 other songs on Octane’s play […]

Under The Influence

August 24, 2015

Elle King’s follow up to her massive hit Ex’s & Oh’s, Under the Influence is probably about love, but then again a lot of people love alcohol and drugs.  She is the daughter of actor and comedian Rob Schneider, aka Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo.

Sorry to double down on Jason Isbell, but I am going to do it anyway.  His new album and last are chock full of recovery related material by his own admission.  You just have to listen with the ears of experience to pick up on some of it. My first introduction to his music was the […]

Jason Isbell, a Sober Success Story

August 13, 2015

So proud of this Alabama man for growing up.  Getting sober has put him on top of the musical world for the moment. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/jason-isbell-on-success-after-excess/ Here he is talking about the benefits of sobriety at Bonnaroo: My new favorite song; it’s about being thankful:

Muswell Hillbillies is the ninth studio album by the English rock group The Kinks, released in November 1971. Are You Building Your Ship To Wreck?

When Darkness Descended on the Big Country

June 29, 2015

You certainly remember this band or at least the song if you grew up in the 80’s.  Their big hit in America still a staple of classic rock, commercials, and pop culture: I stumbled across this by accident yesterday. I knew the singer had passed, but for some reason thought it was cancer. Guess I […]

Most Viewed AA Meeting on Youtube

June 11, 2015

Well it may not be real, and it may not be your cup of tea, but leave it to Marshall Mathers to come to the AA podium and share all the ugly truths of how addiction affected his family, especially if it had taken him out permanently.  300,000,000 views.  Not bad Slim Shady. Eminem on […]

Jungle Music

June 4, 2015

Stumbled across these songs a couple of years ago, and they have stuck with me; often retrieved from my Ipod at moments when added resolve is needed.  While the first I use more as a battle cry into difficult days.  The second is more uplifting and definitely gives me the positive feeling that getting through […]

Sufjan Stevens, Sad Songs of Hope

May 7, 2015

It’s been a long time since a song has pulled me in like Sufjan Stevens ” I Should Have Known Better” from his new album “Carrie & Lowell”. I first heard it a couple of weeks ago and the imagery and tone immediately got me; but one line in particular about his niece, brought back strong memories of my […]

Röyksopp “The Alcoholic”

Great fan made video for the song “The Alcoholic” by Röyksopp. Röyksopp is an electronic music duo that are as well know for their for their chilled out ambient music as they are for their high energy dance tracks accompanied by some of EDM’s biggest stars.  They have reached the No.1 spot on the music charts […]
