Raise your hand if you knew that the legend of the Jack O’Latern revolved around a drunk dude named Stingy Jack. TIL – Halloween can be fun but disastrous if you throw alcohol in the mix. Stay safe and have a Happy Halloween! Here are some tales of the Jack O’Latern: The Irish brought the […]

Have you ever missed out on a song from your wayward youth? Somehow I missed out totally on a song that is on my ipod now and my favorite of the moment. How can it be that an apparently popular song by a big band from the 80’s flew past my radar or, at least never registered […]
I just finished watching The Matrix on AMC. What a classic flick. I somehow remember seeing it at the theater when it came out in ’99, even though I was a fullblown alcoholic nut job at the time. Luckily back then it was easy to avoid spoilers with the ancient web (matrix) as it was. […]
Colin Farrell is starring in a reboot of the classic 80’s scifi flick “Total Recall” and is talking about his recovery while out promoting the new movie, scheduled to hit theaters this August. I have not iresearched his recovery methods, but read he is big into yoga; however a trained ear can usually ferret out […]
News is just hitting that Whitney Houston has died at the young age of 48. Cause and location of death are unknown at the time. You already know why I am reporting this on a substance abuse site. I am sure that if alcohol and drugs were not the immediate cause of death in this instance, they […]
Evan Dando, the lead singer for The Lemonheads, is getting some unwanted publicity right now for a picture he posted via twitter that appears to be him and a couple of friends in a hotel room sitting at a table preparing to snort some lines of something. When I think of alternative music; The Lemonheads always come […]
Ted Williams has had a meteoric rise to fame and fall from grace, thanks mainly to our lightning fast media. The rise would not have been possible if he had not been blessed with what some are calling the perfect radio voice, the power of the press, youtube, and a morning radio show; the fall can […]
Working alone late one night last week at my place of employment, I had one of those “moments”. After the store closes and I let the last employee out the front door, it takes me anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to do the paperwork of the day’s sales and get things ready for […]
Willis Jackson from Diff’rent Strokes fame, aka Todd Bridges could be considered a last man standing of sorts of the late 70’s teen actors. He certainly is the only survivor of his teen castmates from the show. The series that made stars out of child actors included Gary Coleman, Dana Plato, and himself. The show was groundbreaking in it’s casting, and treatment of serious issues such as […]
Several weeks ago I mentioned to TDA that a favorite band of mine was going to play at a local music festival and asked him if he might like to attend with me. The event Schaeffer Crawfish Boil is a yearly event in Birmingham and has attracted many big name acts over the years. This year has many highlights but the one band I was most interested in seeing is Everclear. TDA said he has always liked their music but wasn’t sold on the idea mainly due to his aversion to a throng of beer swilling mud bug eaters. I tried to sway his opinion by throwing in the fact that the lead singer for Everclear is a recovered(ing) addict. Which led to several questions which I did not know the answer to? In an attempt to further my knowledge on all things Everclear I used the internet to research Art’s story and see if he had any thoughts on recovery.
Inspiring fierce arguments between adoring fans and detractors even thirty years after her death, the voice of Maria Callas may not have been superior to all others but there can be little doubt that she is one of the most famous opera stars of the twentieth century. The reason she’s one of my personal favorites dates back many years ago during the first few months of my sobriety. My only possession was an old Ford Courier with inoperable doors so I was forced to hop in and out the window like a Duke boy. Stuck in the cassette player left over from who knows where was a compilation tape that included Callas performing Bizet’s Carmen. A strange TV mix tape, it also had Peter, Paul, and Mary’s I Dig and yes this was the 90’s not 70’s. I must have played it a million times.
