A friend of mine is going through a very trying time, I’m sure the world must seem an awful cold and lonely place to him right now. He’s been in recovery for a couple of years and is no stranger to tough breaks, but this one has got to hurt.

He is going to make it through this all right though, and he is going to come out on the other side stronger and happier… this is what happens when drinking is no longer the answer.

Many new to recovery naively expect that just because one has stopped drinking and drugging that the world becomes a nicer, kinder place full of opportunity. I wish! Don’t get me wrong, good things really do happen more frequently because we make it so. We learn to take advantage of the open doors, find ways around the obstacles, and when life lands a roundhouse on the jaw… we shake it off and keep moving forward looking for a kinder environment instead of giving up and just numbing the pain.

My first thought when I had heard what happened was, why now? When everything was just getting good in his recovery, blam! I feared what would happen; would he lose his grip on recovery and slide back into old habits? After a while it dawned on me though, I shouldn’t be worrying so much about what trouble may happen and instead be encouraged by the fact that this happened now while he is in recovery; because when drinking is no longer the answer, good things can happen.
