It used to be that every Saturday night I would go out with my husband and we would go do a bar and get drunk. It would be pretty fun…until Sunday.
I would always have a hang-over. Sometimes it would be the kind where I had to lay on the bathroom floor to sleep because I wouldn’t want to be out of toilet range. Other times it would just be that I was completely dehydrated and tired and wouldn’t get off the couch all day.

Whichever hang-over I ended up with there was one thing that always stayed the same. My son would have to deal with a mother that was too sick or too tired to do anything fun with him on Sundays. I never really thought about it much until I entered recovery. Then I thought about it a lot.
This past Sunday instead of dying on the couch all day, my husband and I taught my 4 year old son to ride his big boy bike. No training wheels…look out world! I can honestly say that this would not have happened if I was still drinking and drugging.
I could spend an eternity thinking of what I should have done, what I could have done and what I didn’t do. Luckily I realized very early in my recovery that dwelling on those things aren’t going to change the past. What I really need to do is focus on today and make it the best today that I can. By doing that I can be sure that in the future, when I think of my past I will be happy about it.

It's been a long week with the funeral and all the other matters swirling around here, but you have made it a better one by posting this. Take care of yourself, you are definitely a winner.
Its hard to do – but it’s great advice.
Nice posting. I agree that one should look forward. Never throw away your rearview mirror (never forget the past) but there is no reason to live in the past.
