TDA Salute for Dr. A. Thomas McClellan

by The Discovering Alcoholic on December 8, 2009

Deputy Director A. Thomas McClellan at The Discovering AlcoholicDr. A Thomas McClellan of the University of Pennsylvania was sworn in as the Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy in August. He is impeccably qualified for the position and has more than earned the position because of his training, experience, and more importantly at least to me-the personal suffering he and his family have endured because of addiction.

You can check out why he gets a TDA Salute and ringing endorsement from me in this NYT story that details his professional background and family’s tragic history with alcoholism and drug abuse.

Hi, my name is Peter Oakes, a citizen of New Zealand. I recently attended a conference in Auckland, NZ at which Dr McLellan was a guest speaker. Outstanding, stimulating and a brilliant ability to convey sometimes complex information in a clear manner. I have been trying, without success, to contact Dr McLellan with regard to one of the definitions in his presentation. Please could you forward the question to him if that is OK. In terms of definition of Medication Assisted Sobriety, does this refer to addiction specific medication e’g antabuse, naltrexone etc, or psychotropic meds for mental health conditions generally ? For my part, as a recovering addict and author about recovery ( see http://www.orpp.co.nz ), I am delighted to now have definitions
to be able to describe recovery to non-addicts.
Kindest regards
Peter Oakes
