We cover the topic often enough, but this was one of those pictures that just begged for a topic. Alcoholics/addicts are selfish.

Along with lying, it is one of the two most identifying characteristics of the disease; the drink/drug is priority and the beast addiction always eats first. Most try to deny the fact (alcoholics in denial, imagine that) especially parents, but the fact remains that their drug of choice rides shotgun while the kids are relegated to the backseat. An apt turn of phrase considering the number of people arrested buying drugs with their kid along… because they considered it too dangerous to leave them alone at home. It doesn’t mean the parents don’t love or care for their kids but through the magic of addictive thinking and some industrial strength rationalization the kids always seem to be better off when mommy and daddy have their drugs.

Not to pick on just parents, during my drinking days I wouldn’t have considered visiting my family unless it was to enable my addiction- yeah that’s right, family second. I chose friends, attended social events, and even began and ended relationships based solely on the availability of alcohol and its acceptance. I might have actually made some friends, but they were like the ice in the cooler… sure, it made the beer more enjoyable, but I would have drank it hot anyway. Consider this caveat emptor if you are currently dating an alcoholic!
