A close friend sent me a link to a story that ran on NPR today. This friend knows me better than most, because she’s my mom; so I paid close attention to the piece and it did indeed hold a little gem of alcoholic insider information. I have never heard the escalation of drinking described using the term mission creep; but it is indeed an apt comparison. Another way you may have heard it said is “I only drink on special occasions; like the sun coming up”.
Mission creep and scope creep come up a lot in project management; it refers to uncontrolled changes or continuous growth in a project’s scope. This can occur when the scope of a project is not properly defined, documented, or controlled. It is generally considered harmful.
Scope creep alcoholism cerainly happened to me. Some big turning points:
- When every day is special, and you start to measure your drinking by how many a day
- When the number per day no longer matters, but the hour you start
- When you actually start your day by drinking scope (the mouthwash)
Listen to comedian Jamie Kilstein talk about being both an alcoholic and a food addict. He brings up some good points, that are easier to digest when presented in good humor.
