Politicians care about getting re-elected. Their two biggest problems are delivering on enough campaign promises to stand a chance and not angering their other constituency (business).

Blanket prohibition of substances unlikely. Too much money (businesses and livelihoods) involved. Need cash for the war chest!!

Similarly, medical m-j has become a reality. I predict that within 10 years it will be taxed and regulated. My take on this is it's simple greed. A brand new revenue stream for Uncle Sam.

Short version of what you say is true. Would someone give an active alcoholic another liver to ruin? Probably not.

Withholding treatment based on continued lifestyle choices is something that does happen now, albeit in a limited way. Need to ask the GF for more info on this one.

Working evenings. It's Friday night (for me!!) Need to get off my soapbox and crash.

do we want re-election and political concerns the deciding factors in our personal health care? Who is to say what is healthy, decides what is a health issue that the government should regulate or abolish?

And of course the big one here, is addiction a life choice, a moral failure, or a disease? Soemthing tells me that medical facts and sound logic wouldn't play a major role in answering this question, it would hinge more upon the largely uninformed opinions of the biggest donors and voting blocs.

Asked the GF for her professional opinion on your post. (She's an MD.)
Regarding insurance companies managing health care, she says that they're trying VERY hard. For them, it's the bottom line.
She said that the bean counters attempt to exert a large degree of control over the process that is called medicine, with varying degrees of success.
