Merry Christmas to All

by The Discovering Alcoholic on December 25, 2007

I will make the Christmas update of The Discovering Alcoholic short and sweet. First, merry Christmas to all that visit TDA and a special Yuletide greeting to my regulars; I hope that everyone is having a safe and sober holiday. Secondly, I would like to wish the same to a very special group of young men who will spend this Christmas far from home—the 3rd platoon, 1st Squadron, 91st Calvary Regiment of the 173 rd Airborne Brigade.

1st Lt Vinny Duenas (see pic right) leads this group of calvary troopers who are accomplishing their mission in Afghanistan. You can read about these brave young men and see additional pictures in this story here that describes how they deal with ambushes and gun battles as everyday events. It brings a little perspective to what I call “stress” in my own life.

I found Vinny and his platoon at AnySoldier.com, a site that specializes in matching up supportive citizens who would like to show their appreciation to our soldiers who are in harm’s way. In late November I sent out a care package that included items they had specifically requested. I hope it made to them before today but they are a combat unit that can be in the field for extended periods. It doesn’t have to be a holiday for you to send these guys a care package though, if you have the means I hope that you will consider doing the same. I have sent out several packages in the past and soldiers that return have told me personally how much these packages from home mean to these guys.

For many years I lived in my own little world where the only thing that mattered was that I fed my disease; selfish to a fault and consumed by my own problems. In my recovery, I have learned how much better and bigger my world becomes through the gift of giving. Merry Christmas to all of you and to my adopted soldiers out in the Middle East, please guys stay healthy and come home safe!

Thanks for passing the word on about AnySoldier.com — it’s a wonderful service. I’m a big fan of sending care packages to soldiers. I think it’s my second favorite thing next to not sending them to war in the first place. :)

in which the soldiers actually post what they need and deisre instead of blindly sending care packages. Makes it a little better for the soldiers and a little more rewarding knowing you sent them what they wanted.
