Looking forward, but not forgetting.

It was great to start the New Year sober. I stayed home, got thoroughly bored with the shows counting down to midnight, so finally hit the sack about 11:30. By the way, what has happened to music? The new groups and singers that were paraded on the “Hit Parade” were terrible. I couldn’t understand any of the lyrics and they all sounded alike.

I’m glad that I can remember the romance of past days. Songs you could dance to and love in the air. There was excitement about what was to come in the New Year. Maybe it just means that I am getting older but no matter, I wouldn’t want to be in the shoes of today’s youth. Oh well, that is a discussion for another type of blog.

I’ve been thinking today about the past year. On June 28th I joined this blog and decided to make another stab at sobriety. As I said in my first blog, I wasn’t drinking everyday, but when I drank, usually a tall six pack, I would get terribly sick for the next several days. I got over 3 months of sobriety, and then one day bought a six pack. I drank four and then threw the other two out. On another occasion, I had one drink when I was out with friends.

So, I got lucky. On those two occasions I didn’t go any further. But the past tells me that I can’t take that first drink. Sooner of later I won’t stop at four or at one.

I’ve seen TDA encourage people to write their stories. I’ve never told mine. I’ve told parts of it to a person that I had picked to be my sponsor in AA, when I decided to get sober in 2006.

Maybe that will be my New Year’s resolution, to tell my story here. I couldn’t do it in one sitting, so I guess it will have to be a series. I don’t want to forget the past because that is the only thing that will keep me sober. I must remember the consequences of that first drink and the many years that have gone by without sobriety. Each New Year came and went with the hope of an entire year sober.

Happy New Year to all!

It’s a big step to put your story out there on the web. I’ll try.
