Look Me Up, I’m Under Alcoholic

What mother wouldn’t be proud to tell her bridge club, just Google ‘alcoholic’ to find her son? Sounds kind of funny when you put it that way, but I was pleased to see that I have begun to show up on the front page of Google in this specific search. I still fall back to the also-rans as my content changes along with the search engine ranking algorithms, but hey it’s still a milestone. Now just in case of the very slight chance my mother (or anyone else for whom a mouse is considered a dangerous weapon) may actually read this; Mom, it’s an April Fool’s Day spoof Google did back in 2002 and no pigeons were harmed in its making.

It may sound silly to some, but for me this is a privilege. I take my advocacy efforts very seriously (which reminds me I need to do an advocacy update). My activities in the recovery field don’t exactly put food on the table, but it is the work that defines me as a person and brings great joy to my life. So when people ask me how to find my site, I can say with great pride, “Just Google alcoholic, you’ll find me.”

Some people are surprised and sometimes even embarrassed that I am so open about the subject, but I feel it is probably one of the most rewarding things I do. There are so many people suffering in silence, families that think they are alone facing this problem, that I want them to know that there is hope… and recovery.

Look on the bright side mom, at least I am not The Discovering *sshole!
