Historical Hangover

by The Discovering Alcoholic on October 2, 2007

I started working out this week at the gym. Needless to say I am a little sore right now. Especially when you consider that for the last several years walking an airport jet way could be considered my most strenuous exercise. So it seemed kind of appropriate to post this hangover story sent to me by screedler since I am hurting all over.

This 37 year old guy in Scotland drank 60 pints of beer in a short amount of time following a domestic crisis, and what followed was a historical hangover for the record books.

The patient, said the ophthalmologist, had swollen optical discs, greatly enlarged blind spots and what eye doctors call “flame haemorrhages,” or bleeding nerve fibres. That is when the man revealed he had consumed 60 pints — roughly 35 liters — of beer over a four day period, following a domestic crisis. Severe dehydration caused the alcohol, the doctors guessed, had led to a rare condition called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). It took more than six months of long-term blood-thinning treatment to restore the man’s normal vision – and to get rid of the headache, the doctors reported.

Here’s an oldie but goody graphic from the Chicago Trib that goes well with story. I am off to a hot bath and some deep heating rub, but at least I don’t have deal with hangovers anymore!
