The UK Department of Health has released an iPhone app that is designed to help British imbibers track and better manage their alcohol consumption over the holidays.
‘It is all too easy to lose track of how much you drink. So as the festive parties start to build up, this innovative tool will help people keep tabs on their drinking – wherever they are. It’s one of many ways the Government is helping people to understand how much they are drinking. Sticking within the NHS recommended limits means you reduce the risk of serious conditions such as mouth cancer and strokes.’ ~ Public Health Minister Gillian Merron
The app provides personal feedback on alcohol consumption including the alcohol content of consumed beverages and periodical tracking data.
A cool app for the Brit pubs but hardly utilitarian; in reality little more than a conversation piece for moderate drinkers that are able to manage their drinking without the help of a smart phone. Regardless if they are British, American or Armenian- those with alcohol abuse problems have something in common… they all lie about how much they drink. So for those people like me back in my drinking days, this tool will do no more than reinforce the lie “I’ve only had two tonight” arrived through a complicated algorithm that doesn’t count free or unobserved drinks, BYOB, and shots for that nagging cough.

Of course these kind of apps cannot change you if you don’t want to. However, after 3 months in beta testing with another alcohol tracker on Iphone DrinkControl (http://drinkcontrolapp.com) i should say that these apps CAN actually change you habits. For me WOW moment came after looking on spending on drinks for last month. I can buy a new bike every 2 months if i cut on drinking. I don’t know for how long it will work, but this month i spent 87 euro less (not that i cut drinking at all).
