Ivette Torres, the Associate Director for Consumer Affairs at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is making sure that people know early about the upcoming 2009 Recovery Month. She deserves a TDA Salute for contacting personally advocates like myself and others making sure we doing our part, but also for offering periodic updates and links to resources. Every year a theme or issue is highlighted for observance:
This year’s theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Learn, Together We Heal,” emphasizes the need to use all available resources, in our communities and on the Internet, to educate people about the disease and to help those with substance use disorders, and those close to them, get support. By opening a dialogue about the harmful effects of alcohol and drug addiction on families, friends, and communities, we can provide hope, healing, and better support those struggling with substance use disorders as they embark on a successful journey of sustained recovery. ~ Recovery Month 2009
Look out for the coming updates from Ms. Torres and SAMHSA and I will also be adding info on events being planned here in Alabama with our Substance Abuse Task Force and a special series of events at the treatment center where I volunteer.

Hi there all of you fellow AA/NA’s out there. Thia is the first time I’ve posted on this site. So filled with pearls of wisdom & good info from what I’ve read so far. I’ve been in the Program since 4/02/1995; I live in Chicago, Il on the Northside of the city & I am a practicing RN x10years. On a part-time basis I work in addictions/chemical dependency on a in-patient unit. It’s always an eye-opener when someone comes in with a BAL well over the legal limit still being ravished by the disease. All the consequences of their addiction right there. Alcoholism when it is so active, alive & well…..it frightens even me. Just some thoughts.
As my name implies, Tattoowired, I am into body art big time. Yes tatts do hurt but they look so damn good afterwords. I have 1/2 sleeve’s, on both arms.; my back is covered with an AIDS memorial for my brother, Paul who died in 1986; & both my legs——-my right lower leg is covered & my left lower leg has a Hindu goddess representing prosperity—–not in a material sense but rather spiritual. The other pieces I’ve had done—–I have another goddess on my left arm also represents empowerment & strength. Anyway enough said on that.
I am going on a cruise at the end of July & am hoping to find a couple of good meetings in Miami Beach/South Beach. Anyone familiar with that area that could recommend where to go?
Thanks everyone!
Mary
