Say AA Things

by The Discovering Alcoholic on October 26, 2008

I always keep my eyes and ears open in the airports during my travel in case I run across a good topic for TDA. Fellow travelers that have directly or indirectly provided content for the site include a sleep therapist, a doctor of infectious disease, and even a white knuckled recovering heroin addict.

Considering that I sat next to a Guatemalan melon specialist (no kidding) and a snoring fat guy that literally protruded around the hand rest and into my seat area, my flight to Phoenix provided no subjects for interview. I did luck up with the in-flight movie however, it was an indy film with a host of stars including Matthew Broderick, Alan Alda, and Virginia Madsen called Diminished Capacity. Even though it had just a few recovery related scenes, the entire story was based upon the events caused by an alcoholic.

Other than being the catalyst for the story, the alcoholic does little else but provide some comedy relief with his attempts at making amends. While it was a good way to pass the time at 30,000 feet, I wouldn’t recommend going out of my way to see this light hearted movie but the characters were certainly entertaining. There was a line near the end of the movie though that insured its TDA mention.

During the middle of a fight/chase scene the main character urges his alcoholic buddy to help calm down the situation and yells, “say something AA!” So the alky tells the guy freaking out that it might be a good time to examine his moral inventory. I heard another guy laugh at the joke behind me (maybe a colleague in recovery), but for the most part I would imagine this type of humor doesn’t work very well for those without the relevant life experience.

All in all though it’s not a bad way to end the post- when things get hairy, it can’t hurt to say something AA.
